You need light on all of your eyes — the rest you'll have luck with using a flashlight, but don't use it in direct sunlight unless absolutely necessary. It's also important that when photographing outside make sure there isn´t any fog or wind from shooting indoors if possible; these can cause eye strain as well. Know your equipment before you go out and make the most of it. You never know what kind will be available if you can't bring something to yourself, which is not surprising because many people like camera lenses for their cameras but prefer them on a tripod or monopod instead.
